About Us

What is Information and records management?

Information and records management (also referred to as 'records management') is the collective term for the procedures by which an organisation manages, controls and uses its information assets.  It covers information and records in all media and relates to how information is gathered, processed, stored, accessed, used, shared and, ultimately, when and how it is either permanently preserved or destroyed. Information Governance is a facet of information and records management, as are business processes improvement and knowledge management.

What is the Information and Records Management Society?

The Information and Records Management Society is the foremost professional association for all information professionals, regardless of their professional or organisational status or qualifications.

Our Mission

To provide leadership in records and information management with the aims of:

  • Championing the status of information and records management through representation, external liaison & promotion
  • Supporting professional development through sharing knowledge and expertise;
  • Promoting all aspects of good information and records management practice.

To do this, the Society supports and promotes activity across the profession- everything from Group Events to a podcast programme and publishing a professional 'journal' 6 times a year- as well as being active in advocacy for the profession and engaging in mutually-beneficial collaborations with other organisations for the benefit of both our membership and the wider profession.

About Us

The Information and Records Management Society (IRMS) is the leading professional association for information professionals.  Formed in 1983 and with a clear commitment to inclusivity across the profession, IRMS now has 1200 members in over 30 countries and territories world-wide and in all sectors of the business world- both public and private.

Membership of the Society is open to all and its membership rates are deliberately designed to be accessible to all- with annual individual membership set at under £100 pounds and Corporate Membership a modest £350.  Students and retired professionals receive concessions on these fees.

-free access to all group events (in effect day conferences of which there are upwards of 30 a year across the UK and Ireland);

-access to exclusive online resources;

-receipt of the professionally-acclaimed high quality IRMS Bulletin (published every second month across the year);

-discounted attendance at our Annual Conference (acknowledged as Europe's Leading IRM Event);

-discounted attendance at events staged by leading training providers such as TFPL, HC-UK and Tribal; and

-access to our professional Mentorship Scheme (under which senior professionals give their time free of charge to mentor those just starting out).
