Living the Dream - the pleasures and pains of life as a self-employed Information Management Consultant

Conference 2008 Workshop 14 - Tuesday 15.00-16.00

Tired of working for an organisation that fails to see information and records management as a strategic issue? Demoralised by having to spend most of your time fire fighting due to lack of staff resource? Frustrated that you are the last person to hear about plans to implement an EDRMS? Or simply feel you are in a bit of a career rut and want a change and a new challenge?

If you answered "yes" to any or all of these questions, this session is for you.

Having worked both as employee and as a self-employed external consultant in various IM roles in the public and private sector, Heather has no doubt that it is the latter that has brought her the most personal and professional satisfaction. Setting up and running your own consultancy may seem daunting but it can also be hugely rewarding and provides opportunities to make a very positive impact on the organisations you work with.

In this session Heather will tell you her experience of starting up a business, winning and retaining clients and the kinds of projects she has been involved in. She will also cover both the risks and rewards that this career choice brings with it. You will have a chance to ask her any questions you may have. It is not a working life that would suit everyone, but for some this session could just be a first step towards turning their dream into reality.
