Starting from Scratch: Implementing Records Management in Local Government Environment

Conference 2010 S04 - Monday 10.30am

Wirral Council has gone from a situation in 2007 where records management practices were non-existent to one just two years later which operates in accordance with best practice and has been widely recognized for its contribution to records management, most notably, being Highly Commended in both the Records Manager of the Year and Records Management Team of the Year categories at 2009’s RMS Conference Awards.

But what are Wirral actually doing? And what are they hoping to achieve next?

Here, Ava Wieclawska, Records Manager at Wirral Council, describes how she has established records management at the Council and how traditional concepts and doing things ‘by the book’ can still work. Ava will focus on the key drivers for the new purpose built records management and archives facility, the challenges faced by local government in meeting information management requirements whilst at the same time realizing savings; the consolidation strategy which has resulted in success not only for the Records Management Service but also the Archives Service; the impact this development has had on the Council; and where they are hoping to take the Service to next.
