Information Audits: Options and Opportunities
Information Audits – options and opportunities - Alison Gibney, Deputy Managing Director, Cimtech Ltd
An Information Audit is an opportunity to do many things a records manager dreams of. An Audit can be used to create an information asset register, tighten up information assurance, identify potential space savings, plan a paper cull and reduce online storage. It can help design corporate retention schedules, turn a classification scheme into a workable folder structure, identify information for reuse under RPSI regulations and enable compliance with Data Protection and FOI law.
Audits can be carried out in many ways. A hands-on audit or a devolved audit? A single snapshot or a rolling programme? Alison weighs up the pros and cons and costs of each option. Then she looks at Audit tools – what is available and which is the best: online forms, database or survey software?
There are many pitfalls for the unwary. Not least is resistance from busy staff! Pick up some lessons learned and tips on how to make your audit a success.
