24 October 2007 - Ireland Group Meeting
The fourth meeting of the RMS Ireland Group was held at the Clayton Hotel, Galway on Wednesday, 24 October 2007.
Over 60 records management professionals participated in the meeting whose theme was 'Records Management: The Key to Compliance and Governance', acknowledging that good records management is an essential prerequisite to improving compliance in an ever increasing regulatory environment and effective governance for all organisations.
Aoife Flanagan, NUI Galway spoke about a recently launched initiative to standardise data in the university sector. This project has emerged from a recognition within the university sector that there is a real need to underpin management decision making and institutional strategy formulation with robust quality data and information. Ann Murray of Boston Scientific made an energetic presentation on a major project to convert all paper documents to electronic ones in the heavily regulated medical supplies sector. The business drivers for this project were quality-management, regulatory compliance and the improvement of the efficiency of processes whilst making them possible over a number of sites.
Pat Reidy, of Xyea, spoke of how the information audit can be used as a tool to gain support for Records Management from senior management and he gave a number of practical tips for getting the message across.
Following lunch sponsored by Kainos and Meridio, Andrew Pattison and Alan McMillen made a short presentation of Meridio a major strength of which is Its integration with Microsoft technology. Mark Eustace and Catherine Pope of the HPSS gave a users' perspective on EDRM. Their Meridio implementation is currently at the end of the pilot phase and they will be rolling the system out to 250 users over a six month period. They gave useful tips for would-be EDRMS implementers, emphasising the importance of project planning and of maintaining good communication with end-users (also including them in the tendering process). They highlighted the obstacles such as the development of the File Plan and sounded a note of caution about trying to please everybody in your EDRM project.
The RMS Ireland Group is already looking forward to its next meeting which will be its AGM in Spring 2008 in Belfast.
